The rapid way, in which Siem Reap is developing, means that you are spoilt for choice in regards to how you want to get around. Again this will largely depend on your budget, timescale, planned itinerary and time of the year.

Cambodian coach

Tour Coaches/Mini buses
Available from pretty much anywhere in Siem reap, they offer a reliable comfortable air conditioned way to visit the main sites however will only offer limited options and be full of other tourists, meaning you’ll be constantly with a crowd and stuck with a set itinerary.

Cost: US$30-$70 per day, including driver

Car with driver

Car Hire (with driver)
Perhaps the best option for comfort and flexibility. Most drivers are familiar with the area and the sites and know most set itinerary routes (as detailed below) however often speak very little English. To get an English speaking guide expect to pay up to US$25 per day on top. If wanting to go further a field to more remote sites outside of the main group, it is customary to pay inbetween a further US$5-10 extra.

Cost: US$25-$50 per day including driver

Taxi moto

Motorbikes/Motos
As a tourist you used to be able to hire motorcycles around Siem Reap but due to many tourists becoming involved in accidents, (mainly in part to them being completely unaccustomed to the Cambodian driving style) this has since been stopped. However, as in the rest of South East Asia, you can hire a Moto “taxi” for a day. Often the drivers speak a little English and are usually pretty knowledgeable about the sites. All drivers are required to be licensed and while travelling within the area of Angkor Park must wear a grey numbered vest.

Cost: US $6-8 per day including driver

Cambodian tuktuk

Cambodian tuktuk

Tuk tuks
Although called Tuk tuks they differ from the ones available in Thailand and consist of a moped towing a covered seated trailer capable of carrying 2 people. The main advantage over a Motos taxi is the shade and relatively comfortable seating position (compared to sitting on the back of a moped). Like with Motos, drivers must be licensed and are required to where a grey numbered vest when inside the Angkor Park.

Cost: US $10-14 per day including driver

Bicycles
A very environmentally friendly way to tour the sites however due to the scale and distances between the site, unless you’ve got quite a few days planned you could potentially spend a lot of time simply getting from site to site. Bare in mind the season you choose to go and the fact that you’ll be cycling large distances in a tropical climate – bring plenty of water and lots of sunscreen.

Cost: US$2-$3 per day

Angkor Elephant Rides

Angkor Elephant Rides

Horse carriages and elephants
Within the park itself, there are opportunities to hire horse drawn carriages or even Elephant rides, but usually on set short routes, for example, an elephant ride from the bottom of the hill just off the main northerly road to Angkor Thom to the top of Phnom Bakheng the hill top temple and back, is around US$15 up and US$10 down.

Cost: US$10-$30 per trip

Helicopter flights
The ultimate aerial perspective, departing from a helipad just off the main road from Siem Reap to the main Angkor Wat Entrance. Basic flights last 12 minutes and take in Angkor Wat, Prasart Kravan, Bat Chum, Sras Srang, Pre Rup, Eastern Mebon & Ta Som. It is possible to book to go further a field with prices rising proportionately.

Cost: Starting from US$110 per trip

Hot Air balloon
Available from close to the helipad, they consist of a stationary ascent to around 200 Meters with impressive aerial views lasting around 10 minutes. However you are still pretty far from some of the temples so make sure you have a camera with a good zoom and ideally some binoculars.

Cost: US$11 per trip

Passes
The main Angkor Park which covers most of the main sites is designated effectively a national park and as such a pass is required to enter. There are available from the front gate as you come from Siem Reap, the current pricing structure is as follows.

Cost:
1 day adult pass US$20
3 day adult pass US$40 (valid for a week)
7 day adult pass US$60 (Valid for a month)

Khmers can enter for free and as such you should not need to buy your local guide/driver a pass. Passes have a photo ID of the owner at time of purchase (taken at the counter) and are non transferable.
