Phnom Bakheng Stairs and Teirs

Phnom Bakheng Stairs and Teirs

When most people here the name Angkor, they assume this means Angkor Wat, the most well known and arguably the most impressive and best preserved temples of them all.

However Angkor, the word itself derived from “city” in Sanskrit, is the name commonly given to the region in Cambodia where most of the ancient cities and temples reside in.

The Cities and temples were mainly built over a period of around a 350 years starting in around 870 AD till about 1220 AD where upon the last great temples and cities were completed.

The size, scale and detail of some of the structures should not be underestimated; you could spend weeks exploring and still only see a small proportion of what there is to see.

Some structures had become so overgrown and lost to the jungle that their true significance and scale was only first realised through aerial photography.
