Getting to Siem Reap from Thailand by Road

Poipet is the Cambodian border town adjacent to Aranyaprathet on the Thai side.

With Thailand’s good transport infrastructure, it’s pretty straightforward to get from Bangkok and the relative surrounding areas to Aranyaprathet (Thailand) and then brave the border crossing into Poipet. The two main ways to get to the border are by Coach/Minibus or by train, however it is also possible to go by taxi which is considerably quicker although a lot more expensive.

Once in Cambodia

These pictures were taken back in 2005 when I did this Journey when it was potentially still quite an unpredictable way to get to Angkor. Due to the truly shocking state of the road and depending on the time of year (or more crucially the season – ie. monsoon season) this could take anything from 3-6 hours to complete.

We did this Journey in April which is at the height of the dry season and so had a relatively easy albeit dusty trek.

Cambodian Taxi

We went for the taxi method using what appears to be the main taxi model of Cambodia – the trusty early 90’s Japanese export Toyota Camry!

The road really was in poor shape for pretty much most of the way, outside of the main towns, ie. Poipet, Sisophon and Siem Reap it was mainly dirt track with sporadic parts of bumpy tarmac.

Thankfully only a couple of bridges were out, which in the dry season wasn’t quite so bad as the driver simply drove off the road and through the then dry paddy fields. Only once did we have to pay a local “toll” to drive through these fields to some very young children manning the “barrier”.

Ways to travel

Until very recently there were 3 main ways to get from the border town of Poipet to Siem reap transversing along National highway 5 (up to Sisophon) then National highway 6. These were Bus, Taxi and Pick up, however it appears that pickups are generally no longer used as civilian general transport, as road conditions have improved.
