Siem Reap's international Airport

Siem Reap's international Airport

Where to stay in Angkor is now very much a personal choice, with a wide range of hotels and hostels, the main deciding factor will be both your budget and the time of year you plan to visit. When visiting the main Angkor sites, you are almost guaranteed to be staying in Siem Reap, the town closest to the main sites. Once a sleepy town, this is now a thriving hub of activity catering for almost all of the tourists needs.

One thing to be aware of is, that many of the upmarket hotels in Siam reap and the surrounding areas are owned by international conglomerates, with little or none of the profits returning to, or benefiting the local populace in an already very poor region of an underdeveloped country.

As with most commercial places in Cambodia, prices are listed and paid in US $.

Accommodation

Low cost accommodation – Up to $30 Angkor Wat on a Budget

Midrange accommodation – $30 to $70 Midrange Angkor Wat accommodation

High-end accommodation – $70 + Top end Angkor Wat accommodation

Siem Reap

Siem reap is the gateway city for the nearby Angkor sites and the name itself means, “defeat of Siam”, (the traditional name for Thailand) referring to the many battles fought in the region with their once archenemies. People have occupied the location since the building of some of the original sites, however along with almost all other cities and towns in Cambodia it was completely evacuated and abandoned by the Khmer Rouge when they took control in 1975, as part of their extreme agrarian ideology.

Set out in a relatively easy to navigate plan the main town is centred around Sivutha Street and the Psar Chas area (the Old Market area) where old colonial buildings, and the towns shopping and commercial districts can be found. The Wat Bo area east of the Siem Reap river now holds many guesthouses and restaurants whilst the main road from the airport and road to the Angkor sites holds many of the big hotels.
